Special Rules for 2020

***** (posted 7/08/2020) The Governor of Texas issued a proclamation on July 2 which affects us. GA-28, ammended, prohibits gatherings in excess of 10 people. Therefore, we are resuming the rules listed at the bottom of this page with NO OFFICIAL GROUP START. You may run in a group of 10 or fewer, but only if everyone maintains minimum six feet of spacing. Executive order GA-29 allows fines for not wearing a face covering. A mask is not required outdoors if you keep six feet of distance. ***** (posted 6/03/2020) The Governor of Texas has ordered/proclaimed (GA-23, revised) that "games and similar competitions" in "recreational sports programs for adults" may begin June 15. We will resume the regular 7:00 p.m. group start in Week 7 (June 17). We will issue numbered bibs and time you. You may choose instead to start alone and time yourself. We ordered singlets to be awarded after you finish 6 races. We plan to have personal plaques on Sept. 2 for those who finish 9+ races. ***** (posted 5/06/2020) About the coronavirus threat Worst-case fears were overblown. While highly contagious, the virus is about as deadly to the young and healthy as the flu. Those with serious health disorders, especially the elderly, need to be very concerned. Like other respiratory infections, it is spread mostly indoors and from contact with infected persons and surfaces. There is less danger outdoors. The wind dissipates it. Sunlight kills it. Cover your cough, wash your hands often, avoid touching your face. And don't listen to those who shame joggers for not wearing masks! About the "stay at home" order For now, Dallas says you must not leave home except for essential activities. Outdoor exercise is considered essential, as is travel for that purpose, provided you maintain six feet of distance from others. You don't need a mask unless you ride the bus or go into a store. Social gatherings of more than one person are not permitted, but it is not clear if this prohibits sitting or standing outdoors in the company of others while maintaining six feet of separation. Our advice is to respect the rules and socialize at your own risk. About our running activities We will be doing our races a bit differently, at least for a while. Because we run in a city park, we must comply with the city orders. Clearly, we have the right to run, but we cannot have a group start because of the six-feet rule. Therefore, we ask you to run alone or with a housemate. For now, you must time yourself and need not sign in or obtain a bib. We plan to serve water safely in cups on tables and will post weekly results online. We do not have hand sanitizer, which is in short supply. We hope to order shirts sometime later. Here are the rules: 1. The races are free and open to all. No sign-up is necessary. 2. Run the marked 5K course at Bachman Lake on Wednesday evening. 3. Start between 6:30 and 7:00, and time yourself on your watch. 4. It is okay to start before 6:30, but there will not be water. 5. Report your name, city, DOB, age, sex and finish time to Ken. 6. Observe the six-feet distance rule - before, during and after. 7. Take water only from pre-filled cups and do not refill them. 8. Be aware the park closed its bathrooms and some parking lots. 9. Be courteous to others who also have a right to use the trail. 10. Stay home if you have symptoms or were exposed to infection.
